I don't remember needing to take notes for any lecture I've been in. Either the lecture was designed to take "notes", i.e. the prof would literally explain and write a nice recap on the board that he wanted us to copy. Or we got prints of the slides, where we could just add a few comments were needed. Or we just got a printed "textbook" that the prof wrote, and the lecture was just to get an overview and see which parts are important...
