May I ask what "production" is?
- zimzim 9y agothe actual product environment, not development research or testing.
- GolDDranks 9y agoWhat area of computing you are talking about?
- xstartup 9y agoReal-time fraud detection as service for adtech companies. We started with Java but got tired of GC pauses, perhaps due to an inexperienced team but we were not able to tame it. Then we moved to Go and now we are in Rust.
- gtaylor 9y agoThat is a lot of language swapping. How long of a period did this happen over?
- make3 9y agothat sounds like data science. why aren't you in python?
- kenhwang 9y agoHe mentioned GC pauses being an issue. Python's GC is significantly less sophisticated than Java/Go, which were also not satisfactory enough.
- CreepGin 9y ago> but got tired of GC pauses Lol, were you guys making 3D simulations or something? "GC hiccups" usually only become an issue in high-performance-demanding applications.
- sp332 9y agoDecisions in online ad bidding have to be done in fractions of a second, so unpredictable latency could cost a lot of money.
- pjmlp 9y agoSome companies seem to be fine with that. https://www.sociomantic.com/ https://www.sociomantic.com/ They use D, with their own GC implementation.
- CreepGin 9y agoAh I see. Makes sense. I wish all stacks of adtech can give high priority to performance. The current online ad landscape is an abomination.
