All of these alternative internet systems are a complete waste of time until someone tells me how they're going to get around traffic shaping at the backbone level. There's not going to be a continent-wide wireless mesh network either. I know regulations can be anathema to many HN readers, but if there was ever a justification for one, it's the 2015 Open Internet Order.
