In practice I simply don’t read articles from most paywalled sites because the free content I’ve gotten from them hasn’t been compelling enough. Your mileage may vary. I am happy to pay for things that I know will have a lot of value to me, such as scientific papers and databases; even though, all else being equal, I’ll always prefer to get papers free (gratis & libre) from the authors if possible.
