the brain can sense a lot more than we think.
- IndrekR 9y agoThe contrary is also true. We can think about lot more than we just sense.
- mortehu 9y agoBut notably, from the article: > Every properly conducted scientific test of water dowsing has found it no better than chance
- dv_dt 9y agoYup, I mostly think that once an area dowser gets experience in where past pipes have been laid, then they get better at guessing on their next call.
- jlebrech 9y agohunch detector
- dv_dt 9y agoHunch detector yes, but also human experience with how past pipe laying decisions went. The past people making those decisions weren't just making randomized decisions - they were likely thinking about property lines, and about of running through difficult to dig areas or likelihood of areas that might get dug into unintentionally. Humans interpreting humans, sometimes using talismans to focus an unconscious thought process. It would probably be made into a better performing process if they got rid of the tokens, and someone thought about it, wrote up what they thought past layment decisions were based upon, and taught others as well as evaluated how well that worked, but maybe not worth that level of formalization/optimization either.
