House GOP tax plan would increase taxes for graduate students by roughly 400%
- quuquuquu 9y agoYeah this is absurdly and disgustingly bad. It would be like dividing all the money a company expenses for an employee (laptop, lunch, outings, trips) as "earned income". Under this bill, someone who makes 30k stipend per year (and 41k tuition waiver) would go from paying 2k in federal taxes to 10k. That means, before state taxes, they would go from living off of $2333 per month to $1666 per month, a difference of nearly $700. For someone who is already barely breaking even as it is, this is enough to send them into debt for sure, and at $9.80 per hour is worse than most fast food jobs
