I grew up in the Midwest (Kansas City) .The first problem is no one knows who is being described. "Midwestern" - It's a term used by the media. They tell us it includes Oklahoma and North Dakota (which are insanely different?). It's supposed to include Chicago, Milwaukee, Omaha, and Topeka? Half of the West coast thinks "midwest" includes the South? They need a new term....badly.
