I wrote this [1] guide on how to reduce the size of your JS bundles via transpiler optimizations. There's a lot you can do to write code which results in less boilerplate from your toolchain. It also covers code splitting via webpack and some other goodies (like evaulating the size of your polyfills). We've been using these techniques for a while in production (our library is very focused on size) with good success.
