If you want an example of clear thinking about the future, I highly recommend reading Summa Technologiae by Stanislaw Lem. Instead of predicting low-level tech advances he speaks about what drives technology development in general and drafts several possible trajectories for the future. I've only read it this year and the sheer fact that a 1964 book about technology doesn't seem hopelessly outdated in 2017 speaks in its favor.
- jarmitage 9y ago+1 incredible text, thanks for the reminder to re-read
- pmoriarty 9y agoAlso check out "The Machine Stops"[1] by E. M. Forster (more famous for writing "A Passage to India" and "A Room With a View"). Written in 1909, it foreshadowed the internet, VR, instantaneous global communication, chat rooms, internet addiction, and other things we take for granted now but were incredibly visionary 120 years ago.
