I was pretty baffled by this as well. But I think it comes from people who watch more than 10+ hours of someone. They then feel like they know them. The donations then become something more like buying Girl Scout cookies, or a painting from a craft fair. It's not the most efficient use of your dollar for a product, it's patronage of someone in your community.
