I was made to take off my fish fur ushanka once on an European airport even though it had no metal in it and didn't cover my face, they were just overzealous (and it only happened once out of 3-6 checks in airports I wore it through). Also - how forcefully? Just asking firmly or taking your things off? And what about religious hats, like the Sikh headwraps?
