I think the world will be worse for burning people at the stake for making mistakes.
Comedians are some of the very few people who seem to be able to get anyone to change their minds about anything. They're widely loved for bringing people up. But this is a talent they developed by practicing on themselves, because they are, almost down to a person, deeply dissatisfied, disturbed people. And for men, one of the most disturbing subjects has always been sex.
The exact same behavior by a man can be super hot or extremely repulsive, depending on whether a woman wants it, and this is hardly ever explicitly stated, and it falls almost entirely to men to initiate. I don't find it surprising that men are dorks about it and make mistakes all the time. If we were to somehow make women twice as horny as men, I think we would find that women would make the same kinds of mistakes. Women actually do touch men without permission and so forth, but of course this is not seen as trespassing.
- rdtsc 9y agoAh so it's ok to be sexually abusive if you're an artist. What if he was a CEO of a tech company, would that be ok too. What if they were widely loved too? I don't get it why artists and celebrities get a pass here.
- b6 9y agoI don't think that. I would ask for greater recognition that it is inevitable that men will make the vast majority of the mistakes because of the difference in male and female sex drives. This is not a failure of morality on the part of men. We do not need to "teach men not to rape", the vast majority of men are already exceptionally well-behaved. But mistakes are going to happen. I think it's true that the vast majority of men never harm women. But at the same time it's practically a miracle if a man gets from age 13 to being in a stable loving relationship without doing something wrong at some point. Crucifixion is not appropriate.
- maxerickson 9y agoPeople with multiple millions of dollars aren't being burnt at the stake when they lose work. And I think "making mistakes" diminishes the patterns of aggressive behavior that are in the news these days. Have you read the Times article about Louis CK? https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/09/arts/television/louis-ck-sexual-misconduct.html https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/09/arts/television/louis-ck-...
- true_religion 9y ago> Women actually do touch men without permission and so forth, but of course this is not seen as trespassing. Speaking personally, it's quite annoying but "what can you do?" It's like being a woman in the 70s. Men would touch you without permission, but you couldn't say anything even if you didn't like it because it'd ruin your reputation as an approachable and polite person. Men are in the same conundrum. Many do not like the status quo, but speaking out against it would mark you as someone who "hates women" in the same way decades ago, speaking out against unwanted attention would mark a woman as being a "man hater".
