Many Americans are just really afraid of anything being controlled by the government. It's why they keep doing stuff that us Europeans don't understand, like not having strict gun control, not having affordable health care, not having acceptable social security, etcetera. Americans tend to hate government more than they love themselves and others. Having lived in the US it really bothers me, since there are so many great, caring people there that I don't understand why they keep doing what they do.
