Yeah, we need to stop seeing touch screens as "futuristic". They're a way to save money, replacing a purpose-built physical interface with a one-size-fits-all screen which can be manufactured at scale and programmed cheaply. Some things (e.g. cell phones) wouldn't be possible to make if they included purpose-built physical components for everything you might want to do with them, but in general, touch screens are worse than the interfaces they replace.
