Yes, Intel knows how to play when they own the instruction set (x86, sse1,2,3,4 and amd64). No, amd64 is just cross-licensing between two and only two companies. AMD will never catch Intel. Ergo, Intel owns amd64 too. It shouldn't be a surprise then that along comes NVidia with their own instruction set, PTX, and Intel's desire to own the instruction set will be their undoing.
