It seems reasonable to be against taking away tax deductions for state and local taxes; you're asking to be able to deduct taxes paid to a government. As a counter-example, it's also legal to take deductions for foreign taxes paid on foreign income. And plenty of lower-income people also pay state and local taxes. It's hardly the same thing as taking away, say, the mortgage interest deduction.
