I think you're totally right. An analogy is the stuff around politicians trying to "ban encryption" all the while not understanding that you can't ban an idea (not meaningfully). So, yeah, maybe 10 years from now things do like almost entirely like the article predicts, but for most consumers that probably really isn't a problem at all except in some theoretical ethical/privacy sense. For the people who really do care, they'll just go make their own custom shit like you describe.
