That's why I'm developing eul, a lightweight native desktop client for Slack, Skype, Facebook etc:
https://eul.im https://eul.im
It's only 4 MB and handles tens of thousands of Slack messages in one chat without lag.
1.0 release is going to be out in early November.
- avtar 9y agoThis sounds promising :) Btw, you have a Gmail icon on your site -- I'm assuming that implies Hangouts support?
- amedvednikov 9y agoThanks! :) No, it supports Gmail via the Gmail API. Soon it's going to have a full email client built in.
- tstieff 9y agoOne thing that concerns me about any 3rd party chat application is that it's difficult to know if my data is secure. Any thoughts on open sourcing your application?
- amedvednikov 9y agoYes! I want to make it open source, from my experience that's the best option for all parties. Unfortunately it won't be possible to open source some parts of the app. I'm setting up a company right now to increase trustworthiness. Like the home page says, no data will ever be shared with anyone and soon it will be possible to verify this.
- criddell 9y ago> Unfortunately it won't be possible to open source some parts of the app. Why is that? Are you licensing code from somebody else?
- AckSyn 9y agoThis looks really good so far. Thanks for sharing!
- M4v3R 9y agoSorry, but it doesn't work for me at all. When I try to add a service, I get the login screen for few seconds, and then the whole window turns gray and I can't type anything, the only thing I can do is to close it. Tried several times with different services. Tried macOS version on High Sierra.
- amedvednikov 9y agoThat's weird. What's your hardware?
- M4v3R 9y agoMacBook Pro, early 2015, 8GB of RAM.
- peoplewindow 9y agoHow are you writing it? C++?
- amedvednikov 9y agoGo
- LeoNatan25 9y ago"Native" does not just mean "use the native toolkit" or "write in non-web tech". This app looks nothing like macOS or Windows apps. Most likely, none of the features users are accustomed to will work.
- amedvednikov 9y agoTrue, but it will get better with time.
- chrismorgan 9y agoThe fact of the matter is that in the things that matter, a web view is more native than this—and in practice probably always will be. :-(
- LeoNatan25 9y agoNo. That's actually almost never true. It certainly isn't what I meant.
- chrismorgan 9y agoScreen readers. System themes. Keyboard shortcuts. Text rendering. Visual effects on interaction. The list of things that go into making even a simple text box is surprisingly long, and varies a lot by operating system and over time. Browsers—well, Gecko and Edge; WebKit and Blink aren’t quite so good at it—tend to do things properly or to a remarkably high fidelity. They put enormous amounts of effort into getting it right, because it’s worth it for them. Something like Qt also puts a lot of effort into getting it right (even if it still commonly requires the developer to make certain choices to use that rightness). But something like this, not using any GUI toolkit? Games can do it, because they aren’t trying to fit in with the everything else, but regular applications just shouldn’t do it. I have never seen a single one that was even good, let alone great. They always fail to handle various important things properly, and so tend to wind up painful to use or even unusable for many users. If you care about your users and are not making a game, the sad truth is that drawing all the controls yourself is irresponsible.
- jdelaney 9y agoLooks awesome! I saw you said it was written in Go and I've been looking for a good Go GUI library. Which one are you using?
- amedvednikov 9y agoI'm drawing UI manually with OpenGL. It's not easy :)
- ivm 9y agoIt would be much easier to focus on the core and allow other developers to connect native UIs for each platform. OpenGL is not accessible and the current UI looks hacky.
- dotancohen 9y agoThis looks really nice. Two issues: 1. Downloading embedded web browswer had been at 0% for a few minutes. At I went to close it, I noticed the counter creep up to 1%. The download is _slow_! 2. Not open source. I cannot trust a proprietary app with my login information to my communication channels. Once the app is open source, I'll happily give it another try. Thanks!
