Did not know about this, but I read a simplified version of it a long time ago, which said "carefully examine the first choice, reject it, then go for the first choice that is better." Apparently, this would give me an above average option in most cases (did not do the math). I quite like that and sometimes use it, e.g. to decide which restaurant to have a meal in.
