Am I the only one who likes side projects? I'm addicted to the idea of starting new projects in new languages. How many of them ever get completed or push into an environment is a different story... It's fresh, clean and filled with possibility. An existing code base is usually filled with hacks etc.
- kelnos 9y agoI'm certainly not opposed to them, and lately I've been itching to find the time for one. But putting side projects as a gate to employment seems like lazy interviewing work to me, and also doesn't really select for the best candidates. Unless you believe "has no interests[1] outside of work aside from writing more code" gives you the best candidates, which I don't agree with. [1] Yes, I'm being hyperbolic; no need to be a pedant.
- wvenable 9y agoSome of my side projects exist only long enough to understand/solve the deep technical challenge required to make it work. Completing the project after that is just unfun work.
