Number one root cause: The (non)Federal Reserve system. The big things as a result of it are what caused it. Debt is inversely proportional to freedom, and the wealthy have gobbled up so much of what allowed us to prosper in the first place. People that always go on about taxes or the budget deficit etc need to realize the fed is a root causal issue here. Also, two more points. I think the fed is unconstitutional, and I think Hammurabi had it right that such a system requires regular debt jubilees.
