If they didn't document it, and aren't handling input for an ID that may be passed as an integer, then your problem is with the API, not the language.

  If you have to document it, you might as well have type annotations and let the compiler do the check for you.

    Sure, why not! (BTW Python supports type annotations and you can statically check them).
