It's hard to tell for sure from the blurred out image that the blog post contains, but the "designed" email doesn't appear to have actually made any effort at actual design. It's simply plain text wrapped in boxes with no images other than a logo sloppily dumped on top. I'd be curious to see a real comparison between emails that had actually had some effort put into design and plain emails.
