Looking at the thickness of the device (I do realize you want to thin it out a bit), I would use the area as a storage bin for a wireless mouse:) Seriously... I'm not kidding - I can't get comfortable with anything else. I can imagine having a sliding panel in that area that closes securely and seamlessly - so as to blend nicely with the casing.
