The Big Sleep (2013)
- hprotagonist 9y agofor what it's worth, if i really need to go to sleep i usually vape a small bowl about an hour before bedtime. When recreational shops open near me, i'll switch to dosed edibles. I'm not big on the "it's natural so it has to be great" bandwagon, but CBD-heavy strains of cannabis are really properly good at knocking me out.
- fhood 9y agofor what it is worth, this is also an excellent solution (for some people in states where it is legal) to the effects of ADHD medication, as it counteracts both the insomnia and the appetite loss.
- Filligree 9y agoIs that tested and verified safe? Using one drug to counteract the side-effects of another is otherwise rather risky, and can be much more so than taking either in isolation.
- hprotagonist 9y agothere's not really enough evidence to know. There are very few reported events of bad interactions, but that doesn't mean anything because you can't rule out serious underreporting -- particularly when cannabis is still a schedule 1 drug, so of course nobody's going to cop to it.
- pizza 9y agowell, there's a heuristic we can use: if the DEA isn't using a dangerous drug-drug interaction as propaganda against use of either, but the interaction has been studied, then you can use that as hints/evidence/belief before even getting into self-reports
- randycupertino 9y agoTrazodone works like a charm for me. Knocks me right out. I take it 1x a week when I want to catch up.
- pizza 9y agoi've never had dreams of such vivacity, memorability and duration as when i'd been prescribed trazodone. it almost made up for the grogginess the following morning.. :P
- icantdrive55 9y agoI would not want to be the one who had the rare side effect that is only eliminated by a injection to the brain though. It rare side effect. I'm glad the drug works for you.
- emanresu4 9y agoDo you find that vaping gives you the same high as smoking? When I switched to vaping I felt a bit more anxious and "head high" than when smoking, and I ascribed that to inefficient vaporization of CBD vs. THC. Granted, I generally go for sativa/CBD-light strains in the first place so the effect may be amplified.
- hprotagonist 9y agoI think there's a strong temperature profile dependence. I've only had experience with dry herb, but some of the same caveats ought to apply to rosin or shatter. "full extraction" vapes will give you the same full body-lock sleepy vibes that one gets from smoking. They run hot enough to get the CBD fully vaporized, and i believe there's some interplay between the various THC forms and CBD that matter. Butane vapes seem to excel here, if face-melting is what you're looking for. If you run at a lower temperature, you shift the THC/CBD balance a little, and the couch-lock lessens. (I believe THC alone is a mild stimulant) Anything below about 390F is very head-high focused, so music sounds great but I can still walk around and do stuff instead of stare at a wall.
- jerkstate 9y agoI have heard that temperature and time converts THC to CBN, a different cannabinoid that is more "sleepy," and that is one reason why baked edibles are usually more soporific.
- hprotagonist 9y agothat’s in line with my understanding too. hopefully the chemistry clears up in the next few years; it’s interesting stuff.
- goldenkey 9y agoMost likely its just certain turpines. Carotines, limonenes, etc
- Filligree 9y agoDetailed stories are one thing, but the journalist here didn't need to follow all the rules of fiction writing. Narrative summary is actually fine. Please tell, don't show. Does anyone want to summarise what the article says?
- digitalzombie 9y agoIt's a story about a drug company that is trying to unseat the current most popular sleeping drug. They went to the FDA process twice. At the end of the article the FDA is only approving 10mm dosage of the drug which is just as effective as placebo and that if the patient get no effect then doctor can prescribe higher dosage. The drug company wants to go back and get approve at the higher starting dosage because starting at 10mm is stupid and would make user think their drug is ineffective. I actually like the story, I just interned from FDA and am taking survival analysis right now and it's pretty nice to get a clear view of everything and history of sleeping drug and the mindset of FDA and the Drug company.
- canjobear 9y agoI remember reading this in 2013. Does anyone know what became of the drug they're talking about?
- fern12 9y agoThis is the backstory of Belsomra.
- Nomentatus 9y agoDarkness - real darkness, meaning you can't see the back of your hand, at exactly the same times every day. I'm old, been through lots, never taken a sleeping pill since adopting this habit decades ago and can't imagine why people do. Before that, ridiculously bad insomnia. I've lost sleep 'cause I didn't take a pain pill now and then.
