In Australia (where the snakes are far less friendly than they are in Austria), Austrian and German tourists often have to be rescued from remote areas, beaches, deserts etc. for precisely the same reason: they thought they could do it in flip-flops. (Disclaimer: am Australian, living in Austria, and if I hear that stupid joke one more time I'm gonna start throwing snakes at people. The friendly kind, y'know .. Austrians.)
