Non-scientist here, is this a Nobel Prize caliber discovery? Just trying to get some perspective here. It sounds exciting.
- scentoni 9y agoBasically they've made the first direct observations of what causes a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-ray_burst https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-ray_burst I expect there will be a Nobel, not immediately but after years of accumulating statistics on many different GRBs.

- semaphoreP 9y agoQuite possibly I think. This is both confirmation that neutron star mergers do indeed exist and create kilonova, and the first detection of an astronomical event with both gravitational waves and light. Nobel prize is only limited to three people though, so it's unclear who they would give it to, given there are thousands of people that contributed to this.

- perlgeek 9y agoIf this year's Nobel Prize hadn't been for a Gravitational Wave discovery, I'd said "yes" without hesitation. Now I'm not sure.
