It's an "old" method in so far as when it was created but still relatively new and in late 90s or so people are still pushing survival analysis (example: Counting theory was used recently to prove certain things about survival analysis.) There are still new method of CIs and tests. And survival trees. Also IIRC Cox model papers is one of the highly most cited paper either in a med field or overall I forgot.
