Fsv – 3D File System Visualizer
- throwaway2016a 9y agoCopyright date is 1999. I'd love to see this updated. Maybe even take advantage of VR. Edit: Somewhat related to that, one of my favorite books as a kid was Tom Clancy's Net Force. And in it there was a novel VR-based way people navigated the internet. Also, Full Disclosure by Michael Chritchton (spelling?) has a VR based interface.
- colemannugent 9y agoOn the topic of VR interfaces, I would love a VR newspaper. Something where I can read all my favorite content aggregators and not have to worry about keeping all the sections together or setting my morning drink down and leaving a ring of moisture on the article I was going to read next.
- Tossrock 9y agoWhat VR platform would you want this on? For the desktop powered versions, you can use VirtualDesktop to run a browser in VR which can visit eg nytimes.com or whatever.
- colemannugent 9y agoI was imagining a virtual newspaper that you could fold and manipulate as if it were paper. Now that I think about it, this would be better suited for AR.
- throwaway2016a 9y agoCorrection... too late to edit. The Chritchton book is just "Disclosure" not "Full Disclosure" incase anyone is curious. Here's the scene from the movie adaptation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFkyV7d5t8o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFkyV7d5t8o
- folli 9y agoA clone of FSN (file system navigator), of Jurassic Park fame. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZleEOUbDS3s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZleEOUbDS3s
- mitchtbaum 9y agoBefore, I could see the files. Now, I can feel the files changing in front of my eyes with the motions of my hands. The touchscreen touches back.
- chewxy 9y agoIt's a unix system! I know this!
- timthelion 9y agoIf you find this interesting, you'll find eagle mode to be 100x as cool: http://eaglemode.sourceforge.net/ http://eaglemode.sourceforge.net/
- bassman9000 9y agoThis is so cool. Thanks.
- rosstex 9y agoFor Mac?
- scrumper 9y agoNot without extensive work. It relies on X windows which is no longer part of OSX. You'd have to at a minimum get XQuartz up and running, satisfy quite an extensive dependency list (http://eaglemode.sourceforge.net/SystemRequirements.html http://eaglemode.sourceforge.net/SystemRequirements.html), then try to build Eagle Mode on Mac and no doubt wrestle with more than a few incompatibilities, just to get something that doesn't look remotely like a Mac app. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea. It's the first thing I looked for too!
- KGIII 9y agoLOL I opened this thread to post exactly that. It's not very practical, in my experience, but it is a great time waster and a lot of fun. I'd suggest the unfamiliar check out the video.
- BoppreH 9y agoI used eaglemode as my main file manager for a long time. I know the poster before me says it's not practical, but I had a great experience. Zooming in nested folders is cool, but the features most useful in day-to-day life were: - Zooming in the corners of a file to see detailed information (size and disk space down to the individual bytes, hexadecimal representation of contents, some other stuff I don't remember). - Instant visualization of almost any document (images, videos, audio, pdf (with pages side by side!), html, txt, doc, etc) straight from the file manager, with no additional clicks. - Transparently navigating inside compressed archives (after a warning tunnel saying that this operation could be expensive). - The two-selections mechanic for file operations, which I have never seen before or after, is incredibly intuitive after three tries and works well across a variety of operations. - All configuration is laid on a single panel, also zoomable, with detailed information laid as a (initially) minuscule text right beside each option. - It's just plain impressive, and a great conversation starter. Unfortunately I had to stop using it because it was getting harder and harder to satisfy the numerous dependencies to keep media visualization working. This is even more problematic in Windows, which is a shame.
- gourneau 9y agoIf anyone is looking for a modern 2d file system visualizer for *nix. I highly recommend duc http://duc.zevv.nl/ http://duc.zevv.nl/ If you want searching and visualization check out https://github.com/shirosaidev/diskover https://github.com/shirosaidev/diskover

- WillReplyfFood 9y agoSigh. Such a nice idea, but why cant it look like the gfx in ghost in the shell?
