There are tons of fake accounts on Twitter. It doesn't take much to get hundreds or even thousands to engage with you (follow you, reply to your tweets with a common hashtag, etc.).
I thought a year or two ago that Twitter was avoiding cleaning house and removing the obviously fake accounts because they were simultaneously trying to show growth on the platform and if anything removing these bots would hurt their growth metrics.
- toomanybeersies 9y agoInsstagram is in exactly the same boat. Although they technically ban botting, and make cursory efforts to stop it, it's not really stopped.
