2014 article by the way. This is something that's going to change slowly until legislators start rising bikes to work (not holding my breath). It's also something that may get worse - at least currently it's often possible to hear approaching cars due to engine noise. Quieter cars will make it harder for even fully alert riders to avoid approaching vehicles (I'm not implying that it's the riders' responsibility to avoid being hit, but it may be the reality).
