I think the relative simplicity and originality of git concepts is fueling the avalanche. Scott Chacon has been doing some cool stuff implementing Git in Ruby (http://github.com/schacon/git-ruby/tree/master http://github.com/schacon/git-ruby/tree/master) and possibly ActionScript.
