A Giant Hole Has Opened Up in Antarctica
- ameister14 9y agoThe fact that it's a vice article about a mysterious hole that says nothing other than the hole exists immediately made me think of this: http://splitsider.com/2015/08/the-onions-edge-explores-a-big-mysterious-hole-in-the-ground/ http://splitsider.com/2015/08/the-onions-edge-explores-a-big...
- dogma1138 9y agoEDGE nails it but only because VICE is a pretty good parody of itself.
- CamperBob2 9y agoWell, it does say that the hole periodically comes and goes, or at least it has once before, several decades ago. Literally nothing to see here, at least until some actual papers come out.

- stupidcomments 9y agoWhat companies are actually working on solving climate change, not just being self-sustainable? Can't someone make like a cheap fuel cell company and sell them in these places: http://www.activesustainability.com/environment/top-5-most-polluting-countries/ http://www.activesustainability.com/environment/top-5-most-p... I mean, your profits doing other stuff aren't gonna matter if your all fried to a crisp by global warming.
- 11235813213455 9y agoWould a world-wide limitation of one child per person, like China used to do, be possible in the next decades, to save the planet?

- mark-r 9y agoThat was my first thought too, but would an underwater volcano create such a large hole or would the effect be more localized? It should be easy to verify.
- bigiain 9y agoAnd why would it be seasonal/annual? (I think it's Cthulhu. I pray I get eaten first...)
- mark-r 9y agoPerhaps in the winter it gets cold enough to overcome the effect, and a thin layer of ice gets formed? That would imply an eruption that lasts over a year though. An underground version of Yellowstone?
- Taniwha 9y agoit's just the end of winter ... normally one would expect such a change at the end of summer, 5-6 months from now
- stupidcomments 9y agoSh*t, I guess it is up to me working a part-time min wage job and trying to solve this climate change thing in my spare time at home so my kid doesn't have to live in an oven. I hope no one minds me periodically cruising SV / Seattle with a skeptical eyebrow face printed on it and a flaming earth on the back. I am thinking of this one: https://media.tenor.com/images/660a1a6615f7eb2a60e51596f838fca6/tenor.gif https://media.tenor.com/images/660a1a6615f7eb2a60e51596f838f... Hopefully NPH doesn't mind.
- mkempe 9y agoTL;DR-- Same hole in same location was observed in the 1970s. Circulez.
- singularity2001 9y agoit's a water cirulation phenomenon: http://www.spiegel.de/wissenschaft/natur/antarktis-riesiges-loch-im-eismeer-fasziniert-polarforscher-a-1169145.html http://www.spiegel.de/wissenschaft/natur/antarktis-riesiges-...
