You can decide if one of the primary collaborators of Ingres, Postgres, Streambase, Vertica, VoltDB, Tamr... is over-rated. Certainly a number of commercial efforts didn't find great commercial success but the technology he participated in pioneering has found its way into almost every modern database system in use.
