How many of these kids will actually achieve any sort of fluency in Mandarin? When I was in school, everybody took easy languages like French and Spanish, and almost none of them ended up with any sort of fluency. How are they going to handle a hard language like Mandarin? I'm not against learning a second language (I took 4 semesters of non-required elective language classes and then learned over 2000 kanji on my own), but if you go into it half-assed it's a waste of time.
