If autonomous vehicles are a success, then there may be surprisingly few totaled cars in the future, compared to what we see today. I'm excited for that and agree with you that some really cool stuff can come out of the salvage of the future. It's interesting to think about the situations where even the most sophisticated sensors and software may be unable prevent an accident that can total the vehicle. Animal crossings, catastrophic vehicle part failure, surprise road debris, etc...
