I have a rule to keep all my personal life off the internet and use it only for intellectual and public life. It is impossible to follow it strictly - but I manage to do it most of the time. I think it alleviates much of the problems described in the article. In particular I don't often feel like I have lost time following what the computer offers (be it facebook stream, Hacker News, wikipedia links or whatever). And maybe I am mistaken but also 'likes' and '++s', or upvotes on anything also do have some more meaning in this arrangement.
I also don't use Facebook on my phone - only on a desktop. I still don't use the smartphone much - only on pull bases.
