Cell division is not perfect, each time there is a chance of error. This is why anything that results in a net increase in cell division will be linked to cancer. Obesity means you have more cells than other people... to have more cells there must have been more cell divisions. The role of mitogenesis in cancer has been realized for many, many years[1], so I'm not sure why there is still any controversy about it.
