Not everyone who opposes gay marriage thinks of gays as lesser than them. Some oppose it for religious reasons, for example. Also, what about views on other exclusionary policies? Wherever you live, I'm sure many people in your country think that no foreigners have an inherent right to gain citizenship and residence in your country. Perhaps even you feel that way. This is an exclusionary view and therefore should be punished by prohibiting those people from holding positions of power... right?
Besides, you are still missing the main point. Discriminating against people for their opinions is nonconstructive - by excluding them from dialog, oppressing them in daily lives and proudly putting your intolerance to their views on display, you just make them angry and more entrenched. That kind of demonization might feel really nice (when you're on the giving end of the stick), but it works against liberal values in the long run. Where do you think Trump and Brexit came from?
- zimpenfish 9y ago> Discriminating against people for their opinions is nonconstructive No, it is the correct way to handle the intolerant. > should be punished by prohibiting those people from holding positions of power... right? I would be fine with that. And then you'll say "Oh but then you must agree that you must accept all immigrants!" because apparently it's all or nothing, no nuance at all. > you just make them angry and more entrenched I honestly don't care if they're angry and entrenched - whilst they advocate beliefs that treat others as lesser, they should be denied a platform. > Where do you think Trump came from? Massive GOP gerrymandering and voting restrictions to disenfranchise Democrats coupled with a broken electoral system that overly favours the (racist) Southern states all helped along by massive foreign government interference in the process tied to an idiotic media who suffered mass Clinton derangement and a late shiv from an idiot in the FBI. Brexit only had the corrupting interference, to be fair.
- kirillkh 9y ago> no nuance at all Oh, now you're talking nuance! But lo and behold, it's your binary vision of the world that precludes any nuance. If you agree that exclusivity is in principle a good thing in some cases, you're in trouble. Now you need to explain why excluding some immigrants from your country, some workers from your company and some men from your wife's bedroom is legitimate, while excluding gays from marriage is not. If your argument is that you are looking after your own interests, while those who oppose gay marriage just act out of hatred, think again. Many of them are concerned about their own and their children's mental health, so there are interests involved there. So now you have to weigh one kind of interests against another kind. Good luck with that. > GOP gerrymandering... voting restrictions... broken electoral system... You, sir/madam, are in thorough denial of reality. Trump and Brexit happened first and foremost because a large swath of the population was angry for being marginalized to the point where there was no one left in position of power to look after their interests (because all such people were fired, just the way you like it). Everything else you mentioned might be true, but even if it had not significantly influenced the election results and, say, Clinton would have won, you cannot deny that a huge chunk of the population voted for Trump, who did not campaign like a Republican - he appealed exactly to these oppressed, angry people who you and the likes of you opt to marginalize in every way you can. You seem to think it's all a game of fairness, but in fact the radical-leftist intolerance you demonstrate is nothing new - it all happened before during Communist revolutions and resulted in millions of lives lost during wars and subsequent mass repressions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Terror https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Terror
