As a nobody I think that the biggest sign people are venturing into areas where they don't know what the hell they are talking about is when they start using buzz words, technical terms and oft quoted stuff a lot. I think that when people have thought a lot about something, or truly understood it they tend to talk about it in their own words, and they don't talk about terms or something arcane but concepts behind them. They take into context things that just aren't at the surface, and then base their conversation on that. This isn't a hard and fast rule though. As it varies with a lot of people, but it is really useful for me as I have to turn to 3rd party sources to learn stuff pretty often (a textbook or a teacher is a first and second part resource.
