Am I the only one here who thinks that nothing can beat the Chrome debugger ? Nothing comes even close.
It's a different story if you are just browsing, like the 95% or more of the internet consumers.
- roblabla 9y agoWhile it's true the firefox debugger is lacking in certain areas, it's also better than chrome in others. Debugging CSS animations is much easier in firefox, but firefox lacks a way to look at websocket packets. One thing I like about firefox is that its debugger is a just a React webapp : https://github.com/devtools-html/debugger.html https://github.com/devtools-html/debugger.html. So it's fairly easy to add to it !
- Klathmon 9y agoI know the chrome dev tools are also just a web app themselves (or at least for the most part are). I don't know the stack, but I do remember there is a way to open dev tools FOR the dev tools window.
- justboxing 9y ago> there is a way to open dev tools FOR the dev tools window I did not know that.

- vickychijwani 9y agoOpen DevTools > pop it out into a separate window > Ctrl+Shift+I (on Linux) > Ctrl+Shift+I ad infinitum > enjoy devtools-ception.
- marumari 9y agoYou can do the same in Firefox. It's under Tools -> Web Developer -> Browser Toolbox.
- yjftsjthsd-h 9y agoOkay, obvious question: are they portable enough that we could just wholesale import them into Firefox?
- Klathmon 9y agoI'm honestly not sure. It would be cool to attempt that, but I have a feeling at least the chrome dev tools use internal/privileged APIs
- makmanalp 9y agoThis is in the vein of firebug, the original "developer tools" extension, which was built in the same way: https://getfirebug.com/ https://getfirebug.com/
- Manishearth 9y agoThere's also the grid layout debugger and a bunch of other stuff. If you go to the devtools settings you can add a lot of cool tools to the main pane including a canvas debugger and some other useful stuff.
- Brakenshire 9y agoThink this is what Firefox should focus on, Chrome has had incredible resources put into making the devtools amazing, and they are amazing. If Firefox has a few killer features, it's not going to prevent people from using Chrome devtools, but they will Firefox as well, which is what everyone really wants, for the good of the web.
- Manishearth 9y agoFWIW firefox has pretty steadily been churning out new debugger features this last year at least.
- aboutpar 9y agoI’ve found the firefox dev tools to be quite good, maybe even better. For instance, I’ve found it has a little better tools for working with iframes.
- Rebelgecko 9y agoFirefox also doesn't hide SSL certificate info like Chrome recently started doing.
- ntonozzi 9y agoI agree, the Chrome dev tools feel much faster. One essential feature for me is being able to pause the debugger and use the mouse selector on DOM elements, which doesn't work in Firefox right now. This is pretty much the only way I know how to inspect and debug popups.
- Viper007Bond 9y agoThe ones that are packaged into the Developer Edition of Firefox are amazing. I'd say even better.
- david-cako 9y agoDefinitely not. I moved to Firefox when 57 was pushed to nightly, and I quickly realized that I have to keep Chrome around for any sort of web dev. Firefox's debugger is slow, it slows the page itself down significantly, and the layout is much less intuitive (to me).
