I refer to this as my "back brain processing". I've had conversations where I tell people that I'll do the work that they want me to, but it will only be a fore-brain effort because I've got a much more interesting problem percolating. And I try -- hard -- to avoid working for/with/on anything that doesn't engage the back brain.
