Saudi's polity is as modern (as '21st century' if you like) as that of the US. Wahhabism and the 'Western Enlightenment' were each 18C movements, distinctly 'modern'. The notion that history is a linear, unidirectional & inevitable march of progress is highly contestable (to say the least).
