Been biking in both Los Angeles & New York as my commute. In LA driving took 1-2h while biking took 1h. In my experience it's been faster for my commute, however there's still many days where there are no bikes where I live (UWS). I can highly recommend trying out the Citi bike if you live in New York, it's so cheap and many of the companies pays for it.
