Hi everyone,
Joseph Arpaio's pardon was a couple weeks ago, but hopefully this is still relevant. If any of you have feedback/comments, I will much appreciate them.
This post is not entirely about the deposed/convicted/pardoned Sheriff of Maricopa (county), Joseph Arpaio. My intention is to draw attention to the Justice Cancer which pervades the United States' criminal justice system.
One of the points that I might need to develop - possibly in this blog post, possibly in a future post - is a proposal for giving police more options for responding to a situation than arresting people and filing charges.
Another point I might need to clarify is that I do believe that some people really do need/require the harsh treatment by the criminal justice system.
I have a recent personal anecdote along the same lines of this post. A few nights ago I got a call from an old friend... She'd instigated a fight with her boyfriend (she's a fighter) and the police were called by bystanders. The responding officers insisted on arresting someone - her boyfriend got the honor. She'd spent hours trying to bail him out of the Alameda County Jail (California). The charges were dropped a day and a half later, but I think the bondsman gets to keeep the bail money ($5,000). The Alameda County Jail is apparently just as horrible a place to be as most of the country's other county jails.
Thanks!
[About a year ago, I did a "Show HN" [1] on my little blog. Most of the posts at this site were originally posted at kuro5hin.org (RIP). My k5 handle 'TaxiCabJesus' was inspired by k5 user 'ZombieJesusChrist'. At first the users there thought I was trolling our mentally-ill member, but my point was to tell stories of doing little things to help people through their day. My 'retirement' from taxi driving was almost 2 years ago, but I've been ruminating on several topics that were repeatedly raised over the 3.5 years I spent driving around in the taxi.
