Just yesterday there was a similar thread on AskReddit: "What is the coolest thing I can buy on the internet for under $20?" Personally, my vote goes to the TV-B-Gone. It's a small device that runs through all the common IR codes for turning TVs off when you press a button. ThinkGeek sells them for $20, but the "hacker" version (http://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20&products_id=73&zenid=4bfe5b81175bec694252282bf700043a http://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&#38...) runs for 50 cents less ;).
