GOPATH exists to tell the go tool where to find the libraries that go get installs. You can have multiple GOPATH entries in there if you want to segregate things. It's basically PYTHONPATH with a few extra bits. One of the reasons is that many of the developers of Go subscribe to a monorepo philosophy. GOPATH enables and encourages that practice.
