I agree and all dating apps(though Match.com isn't as superficial i've found) and life in general your going to have it a lot easier purely based on your looks. From dating being a feast for you where you sign onto an app for example and filter each day through dozens of suitors to people wanting to get to know you/give you things (better job, invest in your startup, etc) based on looks.
How many of the highest paid actors or actresses are deemed unattractive?
- klipt 9y agoThis is why plastic surgery is so big in Hollywood. It's literally a career investment. In countries like South Korea plastic surgery is extremely routine, especially for girls - their parents will give them plastic surgery as a birthday gift. You can read that as shallowness in society, or simply a greater willingness to accept, pragmatically, that people in every society are shallow. http://www.businessinsider.com/south-korea-is-the-plastic-surgery-capital-of-the-world-2015-9 http://www.businessinsider.com/south-korea-is-the-plastic-su... The problem is, once everyone gets plastic surgery, if you're one of the few who don't your natural looks will stick out like a sore thumb.
- ams6110 9y agoPlastic surgery also doesn't confer anything to one's offspring, other than by perhaps improving one's chances to get a better-looking mate (who might also be surgically altered, so maybe not).
- klipt 9y agoExactly, if everyone's plastic surgeried, then it's a complete lottery who in the next generation gets attractive genes. Without plastic surgery, there's more assortive mating which preserves attractiveness from parents to children.
- downrightmike 9y agoEither way, people are just trying best their chances. Naturally or otherwise, they (we) know what is attractive, and some are more willing to go to extremes to get there and be more like what they want. https://www.britannica.com/science/positive-assortative-mating https://www.britannica.com/science/positive-assortative-mati...

- Y7ZCQtNo39 9y agoI know it's subjective, but lot of people look less attractive after getting plastic surgery. Maybe what I've seen are some of the tail end (e.g., not one procedure, but people getting literally dozens of procedures).
- sushid 9y agoIt's also confirmation bias. If you don't notice that they got a plastic surgery (because it looks good/natural), you won't include him/her in that category. I've seen many Korean girls with eye/nose jobs and they look very attractive.
- 0xcde4c3db 9y agoIn some (skeptic/atheist?) circles this is known as the "toupée fallacy", from a person saying that they've never seen a realistic hairpiece.
- rokhayakebe 9y agoin general your going to have it a lot easier purely based on your looks Which is why it is better to just bite the bullet and spend those 6-12 months in the gym instead of trying to fight how people think. Done.
- icantdrive55 9y agoYea--I knew a guy who couldn't get a date, or even a second look in high school/college. He worked out like crazy. He did eventually get dates. Women magically thought he was interesting. It can backfire too. I've seen guys spend their lives in gyms, and they get the name, "Dumb Bell Boys" pretty quick. There's a happy medium of working out the brain above your shoulders, and the bottom half. And I'm not talking about turning into Sheldon--bragging about hiding out in school, but a little insight, and true compassion goes a long way with the right person. True morality/ethics are noticed by the right people. I have a sister who was voted Prettiest in School. She had classically attractive features. Up until around 35, stuff was just given to her. At the same time, she never worked on her greedy/narcistic personality. She's now 51, and beyond miserable. The money stopped flowing in. The men look right past her. She screwed over every family member over the years, so her phone calls go unreturned. She was so aweful, I don't feel sorry for her. About a year ago, I heard she was marrying a foreigner without a prenup. I took one look at the younger man, and knew what he was up to. It's all kinda sad, but she really screwed me over, along with her mother, and other brother. Plus--her younger self-image is so imbedded, she actually believes this Gigalo loves her. What I still find confusing is a middle aged goofy looking Rich man can find true love. A Rich women does not have the same options. The money, nice cars, houses seem to hinder finding a true mate. The average guy is still ogling the maid. Actually, it's not a weird equation. A young woman wants a gentically good looking man. (Can't forget get millions of years of evolution.) A middle aged women wants the nicest cave. All men just want a sweet, caring person, but must look good too. I find it all tedious. If I had a child, I would tell him to get a vasectomy, and learn how the stock market works pretty earily. If love comes--great! Hell, if I had a complete do over--I just might take testosterone antagonist drugs in my 20 to 40's. (I don't even know if they have these drugs, or if they are safe. I just know I spent too many years confusing desire, with love, and wasted so much time.)
