Just curious, what is your reason? Is it standard "Apple hate" on an ideological level, or is there a specific technical obstacle?
- shmerl 9y agoOn the technical side, their compatibility with Linux was always very poor. From some weird hardware interfaces to many other issues[1]. Just avoid the frustration and use better laptops. From other perspective, I don't like Apple's extreme lock-in attitude, so not interested in supporting them. 1. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=apple+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fmjg59.dreamwidth.org&t=ffsb&ia=web https://duckduckgo.com/?q=apple+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fmjg59.dr...
- hellofunk 9y agoYou mean, installing Linux on the Mac? Most developers I know who use Mac like it because they don't have to install a Unix-friendly OS to use Unix/Linux tools, yet still get a solid and working OS to use on top of the kernel.
- shmerl 9y ago> You mean, installing Linux on the Mac? Yes.
- hellofunk 9y agoWell that makes; I wouldn't think it makes sense to buy a Mac only to install/use some other OS. I've worked in several environments where the development team was equally mixed between Linux machines and Macs, and they all shared the same tools, setups, scripts, etc without issue. Which I think is why developers like Macs so much.
- komali2 9y agoGiven that this was the context of my post, I wish people weren't downvoting you for this. Seems obvious to me.
- walshemj 9y agoBut its not exactly the same is the systems that you will deploy to - ideally you'd develop on identical hardware. At BT we brought or dev test and live from the same production run so they where identical down to the particular rev of the MB our sysadmin guy also would have liked to make sure that any disks we brought where all from the same batch plus spares :-)
- fhood 9y agoWhat do you mean? Linux runs phenomenally on my mbp, and everyone I know has similar experiences, probably because the hardware is so standardized. And avoiding frustration is the primary reason to spend the extra money on a macbook.
- shmerl 9y agoNot from what I've heard from others. May be by now Linux developers ironed out common issues. See the link above.
- komali2 9y agoWhich macbook pro, which flavor of linux? On mine, I was plagued by "stuck pageflip" issues, issues with external monitors, resource allocation, battery life, etc. Furthermore, there was no webcam driver.
