(I found shooting rats pretty ineffective for controlling them - you never see them as they are nocturnal and subterranean. If you see a rat, it means you've got hundreds! A gun is an effective way to kill rats that have been caught, though. I'd recommend a good air rifle over the .22 though; much quieter and cheaper.)
